Introduction / Playing an Aotearoa counterpoint : the daughters of Zelophehad and Edward Gibbon Wakefield / Rethinking orality for biblical studies / Gazing (at) native women : Rahab and Jael in imperializing and postcolonial discourses / "Nothing like it was ever made in any kingdom" : the hunt for Solomon's throne / Is there an "anticonquest" ideology in the Book of Judges? / The "enemy within" : refracting colonizing rhetoric in narratives of Gibeonite and Japanese identity / Hosea and the empire / Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign : the search for subjectivity in Ezra-Nehemiah / "It is more complicated" : reflections on some suggestive essays / Responses to Miles, Perdue, West, and Boer / Roland Boer -- Judith McKinlay -- Althea Spencer-Miller -- Steed Vernyl Davidson -- Christina Petterson -- Uriah Y. Kim -- Johnny Miles -- Leo Perdue -- African culture as praeparatio evangelica : the Old Testament as preparation of the African post-colonial / Gerald West -- Roland Boer -- Richard Horsley -- Joerg Rieger.
This volume returns to where initial interest in postcolonial biblical criticism began: the Hebrew Bible. It does so not to celebrate the significant achievements of postcolonial analysis over the last few decades but to ask what the next step might be. In these essays, established and newer scholars, many from the interstices of global scholarship, discuss specific texts, neo/post/colonial situations, and theoretical issues. Moving from the Caribbean to Greenland, from Ezra-Nehemiah to the Gibeonites, this collection seeks out new territory, new questions, and possibly some new answers. The contributors are Roland Boer, Steed Davidson, Richard Horsley, Uriah Y. Kim, Judith McKinlay, Johnny Miles, Althea Spencer-Miller, Leo Perdue, Christina Petterson, Joerg Rieger, and Gerald West. --
